With the introduction of a new fantasy show from MTV, "The Shannara Chronicles" (which is very good, so far), I feel it's fair to mention the Shannara series by Terry Brooks. While it was never one of my favorites, the books are certainly in my to 100 of the ~4,500 I've read over the years.

I actually began reading them out of order, with the prequel book, The First King of Shannara. From that point, I read them in order, and as they were released, obviously, once I'd caught up. It's good stuff, folks.

The basic idea is that it's our world, only with a caveat: magic. As technology rises to its peak, wars become more destructive. Ultimately, civilization is destroyed through warfare. Once this happen, magic begins its rise. As magic rises to its peak, wars become more destructive. Ultimately, civilization is destroyed through warfare. Sort of a "wheel of time", to steal from another great series =).

Throughout the Shannara Chronicles, the reader follows the Shannara bloodline over hundreds of years. Much like Belgarion in Eddings' "The Belgariad" series, the powerful and world-hinging bloodline is often protected through obscurity of being farmers, etc. Every few generations (or, sometimes, immediately subsequent ones), the Shannarans are called upon to save the world. Usually, they initially have no idea why (part of that protection thing).

At any rate, it's good fiction, even if somewhat of a templated script. I do recommend it for pure enjoyment.

I just realized ...

Years ago, Terry Goodkind sold The Sword of Truth rights to Disney, who turned around and made Legend of the Seeker: one of the worst television shows ever made. Ever. EVER.

But, something I didn't realize - until this morning - is that, by taking this epically-failing step, Goodkind effectively made Kahlan a DISNEY PRINCESS.

You're welcome.
