Windows 10 version 1807 to 1809 "patching" (Patch Tuesday for October 2018)

Post by Coagagin »

Quick preview for those about to patch to the newest Windows 10. In a word: Prepare!

If your machine is running sluggishly or game response is poor your going to be stuck until you either allow the complete download or turn off the download in general (see instructions in the accompanied link below). Basically, most of us will be best served letting the machine do its own thing overnight.

This isn't so much a "patch" as much as it will be a new operating system download. Please allow at least 2.5 hours for download and 4 soft reboots before your done. Windows 10 (1809) will add 18GB to your current hard drive which is why I do not refer to this as a patch but an Operating System replacement with the same Graphical User Interface or GUI.

If your machine is automagically set to defrag once a week you may opt to start this operation immediately after the install. If your using a 3rd party defragger then by all means do so ASAP as what I could see of my internal swap files and whatnot were quite messy and the defrag still took over 10 minutes on a 12 core machine.

Here is a less geeky version from Ziff-Davis about the patch itself. https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft ... 18-update/

(Remember: don't defrag SSD drives~)

You can clean up the 18+ GB of nonsense the anniversary update leaves behind by using the disk cleanup tool. Once it's open, you'll see an option to "clean up system files". Clicking that will restart the app and repopulate the list of items to be cleaned. If you scroll down through it, you'll see the insane bloat the update leaves behind.

Chewing up not only disk space but every other recent update appears to be checking for new code, slowing transfer times to a crawl though Level 3 in Las Vegas (where Povar lives in RL). I saw returns to bar1. ... up to over 700ms this afternoon so I am sure anyone in game was likely cursing non-stop. The history tab is golden for me as a first place to look for forensics.

Where does one find the disk clean up tool?

on the bottom left of the screen, on the tool bar, there is a search area. Type in, "disk cleanup" and then it should pop up as an option to click and run.

Finally ironed out the kinks from the October update, but I bet another one is around the corner at this point. I'm dreading the day I switch to Windows 10. Could have still been chilling with Windows 7...

They still have a death grip on the industry. "Microsoft Teams" in particular is very tough to beat for internal chat. And unless your a LINUX geek your going to have a tough time running EQ in WINE or Bootcamp.
