X-Box help

Post by Eerian »

Hey guys - my roomie just got an Xbox and wants to hook up to Xbox live but itwon't let him. We are through a router (linksis - I don't want to hear it!) and it's not listed as "non"compatable, but it's not listed on the site period.

We've tried turning the modem and router off for a while and rebooting, tried other things too - any suggestions?

Thanks and I miss you lots!!
~hugs~

With the info given, its kinda hard to know what's going on....

Here's a troubleshooter:
http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/live/start/co ... ing.htm#ip

You can connect to your linksys box by going to: 192.168.0.1. You login using admin and a password (see your documentation). From there, you should be able to mess with the settings on your linksys.

It tells him that he cannot find the connection to the server and to check the cables and the connection stuff.

I remember that when I first hooked up to the router it wouldn't let EQ through b/c it thought it was a virus, could it be doing that with Xbox too??

A couple of questions:

a) you've hooked this same x-box up to the same network before?
b) what type of network service do you have? (ADSL? Cable?)

Why (a)? ... to make sure you haven't changed any of the settings...
Why (b)? ... DSL typically requires you to connect via ppp... translation: you may have to setup your x-box differently (i.e. proxy). Also, some internet providers only allow a single machine to connect, and they record what that machine is (there's an ID on every ethernet device called a MAC address). Sometimes resetting your modem does the trick for this...

c) are you certain that the ethernet cable you are working does not have any broken wires? (test with another pc)

1-800-fix-xbox is microsofts tech line for xbox, i believe.

I work at a video game retail store, and while i've never hooked up an xbox online b4, I think you need to buy the starter kit.

Hope this helps, g'luck.

Hey hey :)

He just got the xbox so he hasn't set it up to any network before. And as for having to set up with a ppp, that could be the problem but it's a matter of actually figure out how to do it. The cables he's using are brand spankin new and came from the store with all the rest of the xbox crap so I'm not sure what to say on those. I asked to make sure he had the right type and all he wanted to say was "Of course I do" so ~shrug~

thanks for the phone number, will give it to him when he gets back from his rent's house :)
