Michaela Hutchison became the first girl in the nation to win a state high school wrestling title while competing against boys.

Hutchison won the final of the 103-pound weight class during Alaska's big school wrestling championships. The Skyview High sophomore entered the state tournament ranked No. 1 in her weight class.
Amid chants of "C'mon Michaela" and "Girl Power," Hutchison earned a 1-0 victory Saturday over Colony High School's Aaron Boss.

She scored an escape with 16 seconds left to beat Boss for the second time in as many weeks. Family and friends mobbed Hutchison as she walked away from the mat with a bloody nose, while the crowd rose in a standing ovation.

"They were helping me," Hutchison told the Anchorage Daily News.

She finished the season with a 45-4 record that included 33 pins, one shy of the state single-season record. Hutchison is the third in her family of 10 children to win a state title, joining brothers Zeb and Eli.

why is it that the guys she beat must be poor examples of men, um boys?

I would hate to have been in those guys shoes. I mean if you win your gonna get call out for beating up a chick, and if you lose your gonna get call out for losing to a chick. Lose - Lose right there.

This was the second time that dude wrestled her (and lost) in two weeks though. Doesn't seem like he took it easy on her if she left with a bloody nose.

So not only did he lose to a girl, he can't play the "I couldn't hit a girl" card. Frankly I feel bad for the guy, because even if he's strong enough mentally to let all this slide...his friends won't.

What many of you not know is that wrestling as a sport is done in weight classes. Usually with nothing more then five pound spread per class. This young lady didnt have to go up against people considerably larger then her. She went up against guys with the same build as her. She had the same chance to build her muscles on the same size bady frame as them.

The guy/girl thing really didnt come into play. It was mostly a matter of physical fitness and mental toughness. She had the same chance at the physical part as the guys did.

Where this young lady shined was in her head. She wasnt gonna let anything stop her. All she had to do was overcome the mindset of all the other people out there. All the young men she met on the mat in compititon. All the people who said girls cant beat boys in physical sports.
Thats all.

One tuff lil lady.

P.S. My son (sophomore) wrestles also. Thats why the article cought my attention in the first place. The weight class she won is one of the best to watch IMHO. Those smaller wrestlers move like greased pigs and man they bend each other up like pretzels.

Good for her! I wrestled for 10 years pretty much year round, a year in college, and 5 years as a coach. Glad to see that it finally happened. Flavius 6 woman 0 btw. :P

I figured the 1st 2 weight classes would be where it finally happened. The strength levels at the higher weights are generally too much.

Need to forward that to some friends.
