There is about 120ish teams in Division 1A atm, and this year there is like 30 some odd bowls. So more than half the teams this year will be playing in a year end game. That means more money for the programs from the TV coverage and sponsers. Schools will do anything necessary to make sure they can become "bowl eliglbe" to make the show.
Also for teams like Kentucky, it might be the only chance for a win in a season. Nothing makes your boosters happier than a home opener win, homecoming win, or a senior day win.
Once you boil everything down it comes down to one thing, $$. The more cash colleges get, the more they want.

The best suggestion I heard was actually offered by Mel Kiper Jr (and man do I hate this guy). He suggested you keep the BCS concept of taking the conference winners and placing them in the bigger bowls. Then take those top 8 bowls and use them to launch a playoff system. The winners of the top 8 bowls meet in 4 games the next week and then 2 games and then meet in a true National Championship game on Superbowl Saturday. You could even partner up with the city that the Superbowl is in and make a weekend out of it. For instance you could have the Superbowl in LA and the College NC in San Diego or maybe Tampa & Orlando or something along those lines. You know the sponsorship money would be there, it's just a matter of getting the universities to agree to the prolonged schedule, but then again how many classes do football players miss compared to basketball or baseball players.

I agree with you to some extent Matt but please believe me that the elite programs are not hoping for just any bowl so they can make some extra money. They want BcS bowls. I can tell you from personal experience that anything short of that, depending on the bowl, is embarrassing with the expectations of elite program now.

Why do you think they added a 12th game to the schedule - its so more teams could get that elusive 6th win each year to make them bowl eligible.

However it pans out it looks like OSU is going to play a one loss team OR West Virginia for the National Championship. Either way it would really be a disgrace to OSU. If any one loss team plays and subsequently beats OSU for the NC, how can anyone in their right mind vote them as NC? What sane person can honestly say they deserve it? In addition to that, how can anyone say that WVU deserves a shot at a NC with their schedule. They have the single biggest joke of a schedule and conference. The Big East is a shell of its once former self with BC & UM gone. They rank slightly above Conference USA in terms of toughness. I would absolutely LOVE it if somehow USF beat them in Morgantown on Nov 25 or Rutgers did it on Dec 3rd. That would be classic and deservingly so for WVU.
The sad part is that ND could very well factor back in the NC picture with an early loss like they had. With Mich, PSU & MSU behind them, they now have the difficult road of Purdue, Navy and the Polytechnical Women's School of Blind underwater basketweavers on the horizon and really other than USC should waltz right through their schedule.
As for the SEC, ACC & other Big (12 & 10) conference teams they will simply continue to beat up on each other until that upset comes over the horizon. BC was looking good until NC State threw a hail mary pass. OU was looking good until two bad calls & one bad review. Georgia could barely get past a Colorado team that got smacked around by a Division 2 school then blanked by a rival.
In closing BRING ON THE PLAYOFF SYSTEM!
