National Gas-Out?
(Saw this in another forum)
NO GAS...On May 15th 2007
Don't pump gas on MAY 15th
In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest
of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.
On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station
in protest of high gas prices. Gas i s now over $3.00 a gallon in most
places.
There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet
network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.
If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take
$2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies
pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on
May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil
industry for at least one day.

honestly I doubt one day would even make them blink. Now one week, maybe, but that would be almost impossible to commit to.

Agree'd Khaarma... Everyone keeps sending me these and I write them ALL back with the same rebuttle... Boycotting one day won't do anything - it just forces people to buy on a different day, increasing the sales on THAT day which makes up for the 1 day loss... Now - if you wanted to make a statement, find out who supplies which gas stations and boycott specific suppliers. So for instance you know that gas station X and Y buy their gas from CompanyA and you want to boycott CompanyA - don't buy from them... ever... Get a bunch of people doing this with the same CompanyA's and you've got yourself a stronger voice than a 1 day boycott.
Anywho... that's my 2 cp!!
Gotta love paying 50+ to fill up my little Colorado!! Fucking fabulous!

This will in fact help raise prices not lower them. The idea that a company will go "oh, everyone is driving more fuel effecient cars, we should lower gas prices since the demand is less" is incorrect. The gas companies will be going "ACK! everyone is driving more effecient cars, so they are buying less gas, so we are making less money! What can we do? BAM! let's raise prices again! The consumers won't really notice, since they buy less often they won't worry about it as much"
The only way to be free of gas prices is for the development of pure alternative fueld vehicles. More effecient cars and even Hybrids shouldn't be considered even a band-aid on the issue.

Production of alternative fuels for the time being is highly reliant on petrol, so much so that in most cases it comsumes more oil to grow and create the same amount of hydrocarbons in ethanol or other organic fuels than it would to simply use gasoline. For personalized vehicles, I have doubts that even the next 100 years (there's really a lot of petroleum out in the world that they don't want to tell us about, it just isn't as profitable to extract it right now as it will be in 20 years or so) will bring about a freedom from petroleum based fuels. The future of management lies in the use and modernization of mass transit systems, that can be maintained by large corporations and incorporate technology far superior to personally owned vehicles. Until movement is brought strongly in that direction we will be under the thumb of the oil industry.

That's my point. A large corporation that has access to the technology to power massive things with pure energy sources such as solar. For individual vehicles that's not the case. A solar powered car? please.(electric powered vehicles is NOT a solution, electricity comes from somewhere and if everyone used electric cars we would have to delve into our uranium and petroleum reserves to keep cities supplied with electricity. We would also create more mass production pure energy, I'm sure, but as a whole it wouldn't be a full solution)

Actually, electric powered vehicles are a solution (to get off petroleum). The issue with that solution is how to we come up with a recharge/storage scheme that makes it not only viable, but economical.Goratoar wrote:That's my point. I'm all for large corporations using their money to find the solution. People that stand to make a buck will do the job faster and better than a government that needs a pallet full of documentation to choose what hand soap to have in federal buildings.
The biggest problem we will face going from internal combustion engine vehicles to alternately powered ones is people. Some jamoc is going to start talking about how they have a constitutional right to a gas fueled engine.
It still confuses me why cars are made with the ability to go faster than any speed limit in the flippin country but I'm weird like that, so there you go.

Within the next 10 years you'll see consumer bought hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Hybrids are a stepping stone. Electric propelled vehicles are the next step away from fossil fuel. Hybrid's main drive power is an electric motor. The small cid engine's main function is to recharge the battery. For the repair and service industry, it's a "get hands wet" situation.
As for pure electric cars -battery recharged from an AC outlet -utility electric... IMO, they are kind of a novelty. However if that electric is derived from hydro or nuclear power, then it is part of a solution.
Nuclear power is a highly un-tapped route in America. I think it's a mistake to allow fossil fuel generator plants to remain functional, while denying the building of modern nuclear facilities. France for instance is 100% nuclear powered.
Both the Nuclear issue as well as SUV/beast machine owner mentality is a schematic for USA thinking with fear, vanity... you name it. Anything but an intelligent, clear mind.
